Camelot

During the role playing Camelot simulation many issues and policies were discussed and evaluated over and over. Of all the issues that were dealt with in the simulation, many of them were concerning the topic of conflict over land uses, between the public and local residents against the real estate developers and other types of entrepreneurs and businessmen. Two examples of this conflict over land uses in cities were main focal points in the simulation they were: The Downtown Hotel Plaza issue and The Massage Therapy Facility issue. Both of which were discussed and debated over and then taken before The Camelot City Planning Commission and from there they were taken before The Camelot City Council.

The Downtown Hotel Plaza issue involved the very influential and intimidating real estate developers and the concerned residents and parishioners of a local church which were concerned about the possibility of losing their church and the sacred burial grounds of their ancestors to the lucrative and profit driven development of a twenty story high rise building which would include a hotel in it. The reason that this was such a hotly debated matter was the fact that a church that could qualify as a historic landmark and cemetery that

having this development. A “Save Pioneer Park” Committee headed by the minister was set up to preserve the park in its natural state. Which was also in question in this matter because this was where the cemetery and church were located. I took part in this issue because my role as a junior high school. I had a concern because my grandparents and great-grandparents were buried in the cemetery. So with that as a part of my role, my goal was obviously to stop this from happening but my personal agenda in specific was the fact that all I at all cost had to fight in order not to lose the sacred burial ground which held my relatives. So that was my main focus and concern, and these were both intensified when the issue was brought to the planning commission and they through the enticement of profit took the side of the developers to the extent that it was unclear while watching them in discussion to decipher who was the planning commissioner and who was the developer. It was frustrating because when I was trying to prove the point that moving the church and the cemetery to the other side of the park would ruin valuable park space and that was unacceptable because of the fact that it was the only park in the city. What I was told by one of the planning commissioners was so what do we need a park for. I mentioned the greenery and the benefits that came from that like “OXYGEN” and he said it wasn’t necessary or important. He said that air quality was already horrible beyond which any greenery would help the air quality at all and that it just wouldn’t make a difference. This frustrated me immensely but I didn’t give up because I knew that would still have the chance to voice my opinion before the City Council. My only remaining hope was
