In & Out is the first movie that I have ever watched that was solely based on the gay issue. There are other gay themed movies that I have heard about, such as Birdcage and some transgender movies, but never seen. However, I did see a few documentaries about gays and the issue. In few other classes that I have taken, the class watched these documentaries, which were quite explicit and sexual, and it was obvious the majority was a bit uncomfortable including myself. These days, it is safe to say that the majority of the younger generation are much more aware and accepting about the issue and it does not bother, but when certain pictures and videos are put in front of people in such extent, it still can be a bit difficult to watch. For me, what made this movie very successful and accepting was that it was comedic and uplifting. What better combo to open up an audience to such a controversial issue. Now when people think that this movie is a comedy, more than likely, it would be insulting to those who are gay, right? Wrong. This movie did not put down gays in any way, shape or form. It was absolutely smart comedy about a man who had no idea he was gay and the worst thing that could’ve ever happened in his life turned out to be the best thing.
Of course anyone would say that the movie is a bit stereotypical, if not stereotypical, period. It showed Howard in all his feminine like behaviors, interests, etc. which of course is not how all gay men act. We all know that there are gay men out there who look, act and behave very manly, some even more than straight men, you just can not possibly tell. What was so great and smart about the movie is that it was not stereotypical at all because they included a gay man who looked, act
