The Election of 1896

The Election of 1896 was the first modern and also the most complicated election in History. The fight was between William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan. These two brought change to the past ways of politics. Prior to 1896, Republicans had won seven of the last nine Presidential Elections. Today, they have won six-of-the-last nine. Change then and now was driven by new communications technologies and new ways of connecting with friends, relatives, and neighbors. Starting in 1896, Republicans controlled the White House for 28 or the next 36 years. Some people say that this election inspired “The Wizard of OZ.” McKinley became the Wizard, The Cowardly Lion was William Jennings Bryan, and so on.

They turned the money raising and speeches into a huge ordeal. Politics just has kept on growing since.

The Republican convention met. A man by the name Marcus Hanna had got enough votes to gain William McKinley a spot in the campaign. Thirty-four of the delegates walked out of the convention, refusing to accept the party's to the tariffs and the gold standard. Marcus Hanna ended up being McKinley’s campaign manager. He raised 3.5 million from the business community. Garret Augustus Hobart
