These processes include telepathy or other forms of extrasensory perception that are currently unexplained by both physical and biological scientific disciplines. Psi experiences have been reported throughout history and appear within all cultures. Even today, as multiple surveys show, a wide segment of the world’s population reports having had at least one experience that they believe to have been psychic. These experiences, and the phenomena associated with them, are in essence what parapsychology is all about. Within the academic community trying to get support for something such as parapsychology is incredibly difficult. The reason for this is dictated through the phrase “Extraordinary Claims Require Extraordinary Proof” and unit the extraordinary proof is found, parapsychology will remain a pseudo-science. In a dream study performed at Maimonides Medical Centre in New York, two subjects consisting of a receiver and a sender spent the night in a sleep laboratory. The receiver's brainwaves and eye movements were monitored as they slept in an isolated room. When the receiver entered a period of sleep which dreaming occurs in, often called REM sleep, the experimenter under the supervision of a second experimenter pressed a buzzer that signalled the sender to begin a sending period. The sender would then concentrate on a randomly chosen picture with the goal of influencing the receiver's dream. Toward the end of the REM sleep period, the receiver was awakened and asked to describe any dreams they just experienced.
