Mathilda, the central character, is very sick. She is terrified of the doctor and would not let him examine her. She had gone so far as to lunge at the doctor trying to claw at his eyes. Knowing the seriousness of the illness, the doctor insists that he would need to see her throat no matter what. A fierce battle ensues between Mathilda and her aggressive pursuer. The young girl’s fury grew with each attempt at diagnosis. She resisted to the very end with battle wounds to show for her efforts. The doctor had become irritated with both parents and the child, as they did not realize the seriousness of the situation.
