Respomce to "Who gets in"

In this essay, I intend to discuss the differences between my initial reactions to the film “Who Gets In” and my reactions after reading the article by Peter Stevens. The intended purpose of the film was to show the inconsistencies of the immigration system currently in place. Instead, the film highlights the positive attributes of the current system over the older pre-1989 system. Stevens’s article demonstrates a failed attempt by the films makers of their intended purpose. The film planned to show an unjust system currently in place that discriminates against race, wealth, education, and countries political ties with Canada. Instead, it gives viewers greater confidence in the system, and its effectiveness.

While my initial reaction was one of shock of the immigration system, in accordance with the intentions of the film, my emotions were misplaced. The shock was generated not at the information given by the filmmakers, but at my lack of knowledge on the subject. The system seemed harsh, and unjust, not a system that a fir


Watching the ease at which the immigration officials dismissed and rejected cases seems heartless and uncaring. One would expect an in-depth review of each case, and an informed decision to be made verbatim. Instead, folders are tossed aside with nothing more than quick glimpses, and pitiless comments. You are told that certain jobs were at one time in great demand, but are no longer needed. The applicant has applied too late, and has missed his/her chance. You are shown the daily practices of the officials without scenes cut or edited. This gives you an inside view, and a candid look at the true inner workings of the immigration system. Instead of shock at the actions of the officials, you learn to understand the enormous work load that they have to deal with, and their reasoning for their actions.
