According to functionalism, the mind does not have to be associated with a brain; in other words, machine can function as a mind and this is the reason that machine thinks. ust the same as a computer? The computer stores all the information and data in the hard drive and it makes decisions through these information and data to find a best and logical conclusion. However, if we install the right kind of software in the computer then the computer will be able to have mental state and mental state for a human is what we call a mind. Furthermore, the computer will be able to have its own beliefs, goals etc. like a human or even better than human.

The materialism believes that every object is a physical object. According to the mind/brain theory, mental events are identical to physical events. Our head can be considered as a computer. Inside the computer, we have a hard drive (where stores our memory), a cpu (where analyze and make decisions), the inputs (our senses) and the outputs (mouth, arms, legs)... We gather data from our senses, process the data through the hard drive and the CPU then send out the message to the output to do the action. Aren’t we human beings identical to the computer? However, we and computer gather the data in the same way; process in the same way, and we claim ourselves as “thinking things”, then we should consider computer has the ability to think either.
