Can a machine think?
We, human beings, claim that we are the smartest beings in the world. We are the only kind of being that have the ability to think and act in this certain way. It is almost sixty years that we human beings invented the first computer, and it is just about that long since the first speculations about the possibility that computers can have artificial intelligence. Can a machine think? It is an interesting question that we, human beings, have always wondered. There are even movies about the artificial intelligence in the future conquers human beings and take over the world. In my opinion, machine does think and the machine somehow works like a human’s brain. According to functionalism, the mind does not have to be associated with a brain; in other words, machine can function as a mind and this is the reason that machine thinks. Before getting into the topic, we need to know what “think” is. The lexical meaning of thinking is to have or to formulate in a mind and to decide by reasoning, reflection, or pondering. In our, human being’s, brains, we make decisions through analyzing from the past experiences and knowledge we have and to come up with a conclusion of what to do or act. Isn’t it j
ust the same as a computer? The computer stores all the information and data in the hard drive and it makes decisions through these information and data to find a best and logical conclusion. However, if we install the right kind of software in the computer then the computer will be able to have mental state and mental state for a human is what we call a mind. Furthermore, the computer will be able to have its own beliefs, goals etc. like a human or even better than human. The materialism believes that every object is a physical object. According to the mind/brain theory, mental events are identical to physical events. Our head can be considered as a computer. Inside the computer, we have a hard drive (where stores our memory), a cpu (where analyze and make decisions), the inputs (our senses) and the outputs (mouth, arms, legs)... We gather data from our senses, process the data through the hard drive and the CPU then send out the message to the output to do the action. Aren’t we human beings identical to the computer? However, we and computer gather the data in the same way; process in the same way, and we claim ourselves as “thinking things”, then we should consider computer has the ability to think either. The computer and
