Hamlet
At the beginning of William Shakespeare’s tragic play, Hamlet, the young prince is clearly a troubled individual. He cannot find the courage to avenge his beloved father’s death and he no longer trusts or values women. The ghost has placed an incredible burden on his shoulders, and if it were not for his firm religious convictions, he would gladly take death over life. However, by the end of the play, a tremendous change in Hamlet is witnessed by the reader. He has reconciled with his mother, no longer hides his thoughts and feelings, admits his true love for Ophelia, and now feels it is more than right to kill Claudius along with all of his accomplices. Hamlet finally discovered that “the readiness is all” to live a full, noble, and meaningful life. Ever since his father’s death, Hamlet, became a very depressed, vengeful person. He would do anything to seek revenge on the person who murdered his father. There are a few other things that led to his depression; one being his mother’s marriage to his uncle, Claudius. His mother’s remarriage was not what bothered him, the fact that she remarried so quickly after her husband’s death. “The funeral baked meats did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables.” This l
Hamlet soon falls deeper and deeper into a state of depression. “I have of late…lost in all my mirth…” He has lost all of his happiness and now thinks the earth is nothing but a “foul and pestilent congregation of vapors” He now has the mindset that life is meaningless. When Hamlet watches the actors put on a play and sees how the actor is showing so much grief and crying over a fictional character, he begins to feels dishonorable and guilty. He starts to compare himself to the actor and wonders what he would do if he were in his place. “What would he do, had he the motive and the cue for passion that I have?” He knows that the actor would not sit around for months and do nothing like he has. He starts to question himself and wonders if he is just a coward. He begins to curse himself by referring to himself as a whore a kitchen servant. “Why, what an ass am I! This is most brave, that I,…like a whore, unpack my heart with words, and fall a-cursing…” This somehow caused a change in Hamlet as he came up with a plan to prove for sure that Claudius is the murderer. “I’ll have these players play something like the murder of my father before my uncle. I’ll observe his looks, I’ll tent him to the quick.” Hamlet
