A foul ball
Unfortunately steroid use is becoming more and more frequent among professional baseball players. Why is this so? Well if there isn’t anyone policing the use of the drugs then why wouldn’t players use them. The pressure put on the professional players is huge. They don’t want to cheat but they don’t want to be left behind the other players who are succeeding. This puts the players in a very difficult moral situation. Is good old fashioned hard work good enough? What will sports fan be thinking when they see these huge guys slugging the ball out of the park at a rate that was unheard of 50 years ago. This should be a warning to the sluggers of today like Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mike Piazza, Jason Giambi and all the other big hitters in baseball today. If these guys don't insist that the players' union agree to a ban on steroids along with random testing, then any of their records will all be considered tainted and suspect. Baseball is a sport built on tradition and is most proud of its records. It thrives on them. But if Roger Maris got an asterisk next to his name in the records when he hit 61 home runs in 1961 to beat Ruth's one-season record of 60, what will baseball do if it finds out that 65, 70, 73 or 80 home runs
were hit by players using steroids or other illegal substances? All Maris did was play in a few more games then Ruth. No one thought he was abusing he body to cheat and be above the others. He worked hard and got what he deserved. But with so many players using steroids then who is to say what records in the future of past for that matter should be counted. Something needs to change. Baseball is one of the only sports that do not have banned drugs and random testing. I believe it should be more like the Olympics where all drugs are banned and severely tested. A player should only become soo good because they work soo hard and deserve it.
