Debate on Whaling in Japan

There are millions of different kinds of animals and plants that share our planet. Each species is special and unique, but sadly some of these species are in danger of disappearing forever. Because in the past, people hunted without worrying about the future of wildlife, it has caused the extinction of many species such as whales. Whales are rare creatures of the deep and blue ocean that have been around for thousand of years. They can be found in all oceans and seas in parts of the world, rivers and lakes in Southeast Asia, South American tropics, Northern America and various other parts of the world. Whales are enormous in size compared to other mammals but at the same time, it is also one of the dinosaurs’ last remaining relatives. Unfortunately, many whales are endangered and are becoming extinct because of over-hunting. Now, I would like to talk about:

1. Ideas that supports Japanese whaling such as their economy and culture

2. Reasons that whales deserve the protection like human.

Many countries have hunted whales in the past, but now there are only a few whaling countries, one being Japan. According to the article, Japan Is Set for a Whale of a Fight (1993), in 1992, 54.7%

of Japan’s population supports the idea of hunting non-endangered whales for food (Watanabe, p. A3). This percentage is more than double of the U.S. percentage of people, who supported the hunting (Watanabe, 1993, p. A3). Japan is very frustrated that the International Whaling Commission (IWC) will not lift the ban against whaling because they feel it is acceptable to hunt non-endangered whales, such as the minke, but many countries are opposing this for the simple fact that these whales are might become extinct. However, Japanese people feel that there are sufficient amounts of this species, which is a means of survival and tradition for them.

Being an island country, Japan’s economy centers greatly on whaling and fishing. Many ocean-front towns depend almost entirely on these industries. Due to the IWC ban on whaling, many of these towns are facing economic strife. For 400 years, the people of one specific area in Japan, Taiji, have hunted whales for food and other uses, such as lamp oil and the structure in some women’s undergarments. In the article, “In Japan, Saving Whales Means of Losing a Lifestyle” (1991), whales represent 26% of the meat in Japan (Nickerson, p. A7). Every part of the whale is very useful and in most cases very healthy since whale meat contains more protein than any other kind of meat and is also an extremely good source of iron.
