SARS

S.A.R.S is a deadly epidemic crippling China and other countries. As of 10 a.m

May 8, 4,698 S.A.R.S cases were registered and 224 people have died from the illness in

China. Shanghai, the most densely populated city of China, saw its first death from the

S.A.R.S virus, within the past 24 hours, while the number of its suspected S.A.R.S cases

remains at 12. (China’s Ministry of Health Latest S.A.R.S Statistics). Although there is no

cure yet, people should acknowledge the problem and contain it before it spreads.

S.A.R.S ( known as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) has caused a

multicountry outbreak. S.A.R.S has been discovered in Asia, Europe, and North

America. The first symptom of S.A.R.S begins with a fever measured temperature

greater than 100’ F. The fever usually leads to chills, headaches, and body aches.

“After 2 to 7 days, SARS patients may develop a dry, nonproductive cough that might be

accompanied by or progress to the point where insufficient oxygen is getting to the blood.

In 10 percent to 20 percent of cases, patients will require mechanical ventilation.”
