Chronic Wasting Disease
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a transmissible spongiform encephalogathy (TSE's are rare forms of progressive neurodegenerative disorders that affect both humans and animals and are caused by similar uncharacterized agents that generally produce spongiform changes in the brain) infecting deer and elk. The most obvious and consistent clinical sign of CWD is weight loss over time. Behavioral changes also occur in the majority of cases, including decreased interaction with other animals, listlessness, lowering of the head, and repetitive walking in set patterns. To date, the disease has only been found in cervids (members of the deer family) which are Rocky Mountain elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, and black-tailed deer. This disease was first understood as a clinical wasting syndrome in 1967 in mule deer at a wildlife research facility in northern Colorado; it was later identified as a TSE in 1978. CWD is known by chronic weight loss leading to death. In the mid-1980’s CWD was detected in free-ranging deer and elk in portions of northeastern Colorado and southeastern Wyoming. Jumping ahead to 2001, CWD was found in free-ranging deer in southwestern Nebraska and later in western Nebraska. These four locations are
Now the question that is weighing on the minds of many, can humans contract CWD and how is this affecting the hunting or hunters in these areas? Only one person in the United States has this disease and she lived and ate meat in Great Britain before moving to Florida. She is still alive. Doctors say they do not want to scare hunters, although some said it would be irresponsible to eat elk or deer meet. Food pantries have been very concerned about taking venison in these areas and now the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is not only encouraging hunters to go out and hunt but for food pantries to accept deer. Of course humans will always be skeptical so the disease does not faze some hunters while others have stopped hunting all together. This has put a big hurt on the sales of hunting stores in these areas. At the present time the store owners say there are still enough people out hunting but the problem lies in the areas where large areas of land are being quarantined and all the deer in that area are being slaughtered. The scientists feel that if they kill all the deer in that area then there is no threat of spreading CWD from that area. When this method is used, the hunting in that particular area will be extinct for a long period of time and that will shut down the hunting stores in the area. This has turned out to be the worst wildlife-associated disease on t
