Achilles Shield in Chapter 18 of the Iliad

Distraught already by the loss of his closest friend, Patrocles, in battle, Achilles is grief stricken. He lost all of his gear as the Trojans stripped it from his ally. His mother, Thetis, seeing his sorrow and hearing his cries, asks Achilles to delay his rage for one day. She sends for Hephaistos, the lame blacksmith, to create new set of armor that when see in battle, makes all Trojan hearts tremble before it’s might. The blacksmith gets on the job right away. The first task in hand is to create a shield. With this shield, not only is it layered five times; it is also the most richly decorated shield that any man could bear. The images presented on the shield tell of many stories, cities, sorrows, and joys of the lives of the men and women that are warring in these two cities. From the celestial bodies that christen the middle of the shield, to the massive ocean that adorns the outer lining of the immortal buckler, the shield is the story of the struggles of the epic poem and the life that these valiant men fight.

The center of the shield was adorned with earth, heaven, and sea. Great stars decorate the skyline, the Earth flowers beneath the heaven, and the sea roars with crashing waves. This is a most befitting

Now, the outer rim of the shield that Achilles bears is triple layered with all the might of the ocean. The waters that crash are a mighty sight no matter where your loyalties lie. The Akhians came to war on many great ships, all paraded in a line before the majesty of Troy. They fought to defend their ships, they fought to defend what was left of a home for them, and they fought to ransack Troy. Achilles did just that, by also casting bodies into a great river until he was commanded by Poseidon to cease poisoning this immortal river with mortal blood. Achilles did so, but he also had to fight off the river when Poseidon felt a sudden wave of sympathy for the Trojans, and nearly took Achilles life in the process had not Athena intervened. The river is a symbol of might, but also one of purity in water.

tribute to the gods and goddesses that give the epic poem an entirely different realm to wage war in. These immortal beings give the troops that invoke them divine strength, hearts of steel, blazingly fast speed, and protection from the spears and swords of war. To know the gods gives one a large amount of authority over the troops that do not know. For the gods can being great joy if they favor your legion’s side, but can also instill a great amount of fear in the minds of those same warriors, and can make them tremble in fear before them. In book 21, when Achilles is charging into battle, Athena makes him shine with a star-like radiance, so much that Trojans go weak in the knees at the mere sight. Achilles is of an Immortal birth, Thetis being his mother, so even the mighty Zeus knows his power in battle when he charges the Trojan lines. The center of the shield is decorated thus with all that the great power created, as a most prominent spot upon the shield.

It was with these images that Hephaistos painted Achilles shield. Dictating the struggles that he had faced, foreshadowing the events that were to come, and symbolizing the characters that had decorated this war, he presented a gift that not only would shield him in battle with it’s five strong layers, but would also give a recollection of the great war that the men had fought, and for a woman after all. The images on the shield were described with motion and the metalworking was immortally blessed. Book 18 is translated to mean “The Immortal Shield.” Here is the gift that the lame blacksmith gave to Thetis. This is what her son Achille
