Dancing Bears
For more than 3 centuries bears have been exploited for the cruel practice of dancing in countries such as Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, India and Pakistan. In India, dancing bears date as far back as the 16th century. This practice is believed to have originated from the Ancient Greeks who trained wild beasts such as bears, lions and horses. This tradition became popular throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance where bears performed at market places, and has continued to be upheld till today, due to the arrival of modern circuses. Although the history of the dancing bears is old and savage, there are however, always two sides to a story. For centuries, dancing bears have been the main source of income for gypsies. Trapped in a vicious circle that is created by poverty, often these gypsies have no choice but to take up the cruel and dying tradition in order to feed their families. Though poverty may seem a justifiable reason to continue this practice, one cannot help but feel sorry for these innocent creatures who are forced to live a miserable existence of pain and suffering and who will never have a chance to live life as a bear in the wild.In India around a 1000 sloth bears are forced to dance every year. The story of these bears is sure to touch anyone’s heart. I believe that if we all join in the stand to condemn this heartless practice illegal, we can finally put an end to this tradition forever. It makes it all worthwhile, to help a cowering, abused creature evolve into a healthy, stable and mischievous bear, and to help set it free from its chains that have encircled and trapped him in that cage of cruelty, to a new and better life. It’s such a wonderful feeling. Once fully trained, these bears are made to perform as a form of entertainment for the amusement of tourists. Historically however, the bear wasn’t always used purely for entertainment. It was seen as a protector, with magical powers able to shield away evil spirits. Ironically, because the bear is seen as such a sacred animal, it has the power to command much more, resulting in more bears being trained for this brutal practice. This seems quite surprising as usually it would be expected that an animal that is considered sacred would be the least likely to be vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.
