D.H. Lawrence - The Rocking Horse Winner

D.H. Lawrence’s The Rocking Horse Winner, is a supernatural story about a boy with the gift of prediction. Being set in the early 1900’s, the boy’s family was middle class but lived like they were upper class. The father was apparently in and out of jobs and losing money fast. The mother seemed to not know how to do anything except spend the little money the family had. The boy, Paul, knew that the family was in desperate need of money and attempted to sympathize even before he developed his gift.

Paul was a kid who’s main goal in life at the time, was to please his parents (mainly his mother). The mother saw Paul as a bit of a nuisance and made him second priority next to finding more money. This negligence really helped develope Paul’s character. He was a boy with his mind set on making his mother happy, just to win back her attention. Before he had much money, Paul was willing to give his mother what he had. The kid didn’t have a concept of money and so she laughed. Paul didn’t take it personally, in fact, I don’t think he understood the mother was basically laughing at him, but with his mom not accepting the little he had, this drove Paul to attempt to find more money. Soon thereafter, Paul witnessed Bassett

Paul fell sick for three days and then died on the day of the derby after winning over seventy thousand pounds for betting on Malabar. He could never enjoy the money he had

In conclusion, D.H. Lawrence’s supporting characters really helped establish his main character, Paul. With their greed, whether subliminal or not, it helped show that Paul was still able to rise above all of them and remain an honest and giving person. Although Paul died, what he left that family was something to remember him for. He gave his life to nurse his mother’s habit. I’m not sure if his death is at all justified being that you don’t know what happens after he dies, but with the amount of money he left and the little emotion his mother showed during his death, she is probably destined to be like that for the rest of her life. On the other hand, her son’s death may have had such an impact on her that she inherits his money and does something generous or smart with it. However, being the dark tale that this was, it would be unlikely for her character to get a sudden burst of enlightenment. Bassett and uncle Oscar may have had different endings though. Their greed was more subconscious than that of the mothers. After Paul’s death, they may have regretted ever allowing Paul to get involved in the races and donated their winnings to a charity in Paul’s honor. In any case, Paul died for his family and I believe that was the main point D.H. was trying to make.

Paul was growing more and more meager as the Derby drew closer and closer. He was having a difficult time listening to his rocking horse because the cry for money was overpowering. Nevertheless, Paul rode the horse as hard
