Street racing
Its 2 Am, and in a corner of Hartford the traffic laws don’t exist. A four way intersection choked with people serves as a starting line. Two cars inch forward on either side of the double yellow lines. A flagman flutters his fingers, instructs the cars forward in controlled lurches until their noses are even. The engines sigh, then whine as he hoists his arms. When the drop, the cars squeal through the spectators, so close that cloths ripple. Heads whip and people spill into the street to watch for flashing hazard lights that will signal a win. An instant passes, shouts go up as headlights appear ahead of the racers. There's a blur of red and blue, and a cop whips around behind them. Spectators scatter, jumping curbs, colliding, sprinting. Engines gun and hundreds of cars pour into the streets as another cop arrives with his siren chirping. within minutes, only skidmarks and the smell of burned rubber remain. You have just attended an average friday or Saturday night of street racing. To me and my friends this just my normal weekend ritual. to others its a swarming vehicular free for all that's as dangerous as it is chaotic. Basically this essay will take you inside the life of an illegal street racer (me) and also some backgro
For me weekends begin on a long strip of road in down town Hartford. Rather than browsing the mall or going to the movies like others my age, I join a group of my friends and spectators to witness a spectacular show of speed. Street racing isn't only found on the fast moving streets of down town Hartford, its all over the country. Washington D.C, Boston and New York City is a big streetracing scene. Penalties for racing vary from state to state and offense to offense, but can range from a slap on the wrist ticket to arrest and impounding of the vehicle. With such heavy impending penalties why would anyone set themselves up for what seems imminent trouble? Everyone's got a hobby, And this just happens to be mine. Why? Because it gets your blood flowing to your head, you get this amazing rush when you know you just whupped up on that Civic next to you. Hardcore streetracers enjoy every minute of it, and they love the risk involved, but our crew does it because its a hobby of all of ours that brings us all together as friends. We meet new people every time we go out there. People get involved in this sport for the same reason they jump out of planes or climb mountains. there are no words to describe the feeling of pushing a car to its limits. But do some racers take their search for thrill too far? “God, if you could get me out of this place and time, give me back those 10 seconds in my life, those 10 seconds that was the difference between what I could have done, and what I did do, I would give anything. ANYTHING. Just please God, don’t let me go like this.” Deep words. Words no person should ever have the say or think about, especially the youth of the import race scene. Yet, words like this may be continually running through your head for the rest of your life if you ever get into the situation where a race goes bad. Real bad. You never hear any of us say it, but in the back of every draggers mind is the question of “What If?”. “What if this is my last time going down this straightaway? What if this time, something goes wrong, and I can’t avoid it? What if this is it?” Questions that may be in our minds, but we never ponder too long on them. We shouldn’t have to ponder long on them either. If we did, we wouldn’t leave our homes in fear of what may or may not happen today. As bad as having too much fear, is not having any fear whatsoever. You have to take an honest evaluation of the situation that you are entering in to, and ask yourself, “Is this safe?” or “Is this worth it?” I guess that main thing I’m trying to get across is that these races are not organized. (Well maybe I should take that back, they a
