Growing up in the U.S. was not that easy for my family and me. My father and mother came from low economic families. Their parents were more than happy to see them married at a very early age. This meant that they had to worry about one less mouth to feed. This also meant that neither one of my parents received enough education to find a good job. Both my parents only knew how to read and write and even this was very limited. This seemed to have set the standards my parents wanted for us. My mother made sure we learned what she had learned. This made her feel we would succeed. Yet both my parents believed that a higher education was not that important in life. Since to them the basics of life was to physically work and to make money.

Literacy has inspired my family. The example my sister has set has been enough. Now I see many of my cousins setting their goals in becoming educated. Yes literacy can inspire society, but it has to be promoted more to them. It is the ultimate way that literacy will inspire society as a whole. Yes it is true that free education is provided for the children, yet the inspiration is not there. The parents are not getting involved and are not encouraging their children. The parents are not encouraged either by the teachers and society to get involved with education. I don’t ever remember my teachers trying to contact my parents and stress the importance of education. We as a society are not doing our part in physically promoting literacy. Society is inspired by literacy, but only to a certain point. Only enough to get most of them by.

Literacy can surely liberate a society, yet not every person is given the opportunity to a higher education. Literacy can ultimately inspire many once it is being promoted though. Literacy opens the doors for many families, yet it is not a motivation for them. The motivation seems to be that once their children turn sixteen they are able to work. Therefore they take away their children’s right for a higher education. It seems that society is taking away the only way of liberation.

Many students who do make it to college see that it gets harder to stay in college. Most of us grow up in a home where it is thought that women should stay home after they marry. The women who make it to college after marriage are faced with many challenges. Although it may seem that society is more open-minded, the immediate family doesn’t seem to be. Most are critiqued and seldom are provided with courage for them to stay in college. This type of stereotype is the hardest one to face. This can ultimately bring you down or make you stronger
