By far one of the biggest deciding factors in the commencement or avoidance of the cold war were the policies and opinions that the American government had put together at that time in relation to the Soviet Union and it’s increasingly strong grasp on strategic locations of importance. Additionally, the arms race as well as the strategic stalemate Russia looked to box the United States into played large roles in fueling the fire of the cold war, making any chance of turning back or avoiding further conflict impossible. From 1945 to 1975, Russia and America competed in the large scale research, development and manufacturing of weapons of mass destruction. It started with the Atomic bomb in 1945 (1949 for the Soviet Union), but eventually lead to things such as the Hydrogen bomb in 1952-3, Anti-Ballistic Missiles in 1966 (1974 for the United States) and even the seemingly recent Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicles in the early 1970s (Baylis and Smith, 2001: 85). Coupled with this was the Russian’s stalemating technique used throughout the cold war – whereby as soon as America refused to reduce their military size to conform to Soviet standard, Russia mades a confrontational move to get back on the offensive. Perfect examples of this were seen in 1948 when Stalin severed all road and rail communication between east and west Berlin when he realized there would soon be strong conflict between the two sides (Baylis and Smith, 2001: 80). Furthermore, when America would not match Russia’s military reductions, the Soviets began barring free Western access to areas that could have been very prosperous to America. This action alone severely slowed down the United States plans for free world trade, and the eventual takeover of US corporations (Noam Chomsky, 1991: 27). These two factors were just a few more of the many aspects that caused the cold war to be unstoppable, and almost never ending (at least by any peaceful means).
