the crucible

If people in the world did not bother to seek out the truth, then the whole world would be in chaos. Everybody has lie at least once in his or her life. If there is so many liars, then how can we know what is the truth and wouldn't others be affected by your lies. That is why for our society to be fair and equal to everyone, they must seek out the truth. Those that want to learn the truth are the ones that want to win over injustice. .
In the book, however, people during that time period did not care about the truth. All they wanted to do was to save their name and not be involved. For example, Danforth and Hathorne did not want to admit they made a mistake in signing the death warrants of the nineteen convicted. The state remains faultless from accusations of mistaken judgement. He does not want to show doubt on the reasons for the hangings of the twelve previous victims and the sentence of hanging for the seven remaining prisoners. It would not be fair to the twelve already hanged if the seven remaining prisoners were excused. Basically, Danforth is saying that in order to be fair to twelve unfairly hanged people, seven more have to confess to crimes they did not commit or die for them.
As a religious institution, the court represents divine and secular justice. Therefore, twelve mistaken hangings represent a failure of divine justice. The integrity of the court would be shattered, and the reputations of court officials would fall with it if they pardoned the remaining seven. It would look too much like they are admitting their mistake. Danforth and Hathorne would rather preserve the appearance of justice than admit their mistake. Innocent people have to smear their own names with false confessions or die in order to protect the reputations of others. .
If only enough people cared about learning the truth, then many people could have lived. However during the Salem witch trails, not everyone stayed aside.
