In a world of constant change and fascinating metamorphosis, the place of women within unstable society is subject to increasing confusion and questioning. I come from an Arab and Muslim – thus fundamentally traditional and patriarchal- society which rarely permits the flourishing of an independent womanhood, stifling our growth and freedom. Women are often barricaded inside strict, societal rules and inside a so-called “pious” mindset, which forces women to remain within a well defined and inhibiting social position.I came to the US powerfully determined to struggle against this social injustice against women, to fight for our rights, and reestablish respect and consideration for our demands. The western world cannot truly understand this paradigm of intolerance and cultural backwardness, and perhaps might deem my struggle too basic but the truth is that women in the Arab world are forced to begin their struggle at the base, to defeat the system at its core. Do not misunderstand me; I have a fierce and passionate love for my culture. Islam is a religion which is fundamentally rational and understanding; yet the present situation of Islamic nations- one which is filled with fear and bitter hatred- serves
