Napster and other file sharing programs do more good than...
You’re driving to the beach for the weekend with some friends and there is only one thing that could make the moment even better – a great song. As you search the radio stations, you have a tough time finding anything worth hearing. You search your favorite stations to find that the exact same song is playing on three out of your four favorite stations. The rest of the stations play songs that you have heard hundreds of times in the last week. As you go through every station for the second time, you realize that you won’t find anything good so you turn back to the song that you’ve heard over a million times already. Music is, of course, a great source of entertainment and relaxation, but without variety music loses its power and meaning. When we listen to the radio we hear the same songs over and over. When we want to buy a CD we are forced to pay nearly $20 – often for a CD that only has a few songs that we like. Why is it so tough to find the music that we love? With Napster and other digital music sharing programs, we are able to find the music that we like and own it for free. This is an extremely controversial topic because it is the sharing of music that would otherwise cost money. However, I feel that
Not only does Napster give people the chance to hear music before they buy it, but it also sparks their interest in musicians whom they hadn’t heard or thought of before. Napster offers many live performance recordings which let us hear how the artist is in concert. For most musicians this is a great opportunity to show their fans the type of show that they are able to give. I believe that this does strengthen the bond between the artist and the fans because it allows us to hear them through more than just their hit single on the radio. So we’ve discussed all aspects of what Napster provides for us. It allows us to hear a diverse range of music, and gives musicians a way to connect to their fans and spark interest in concerts. It enables lesser-known musicians to have their music heard, and allows record labels to see what we the consumers enjoy. There are so many positive aspects of Napster which give us a whole new way to experience music. Before Napster’s creation, music was going through a tough period of time when there was no variety to the music that we could hear. On the radio, on MTV, and in music stores, the same group of popular artists was taking over. This is detrimental to music and it also turned many music enthusiasts away from music for a while. This is not what the recording industry wants, it is not what the musicians want, and it isn’t what we want. In order to have a musically diverse culture, we must accept Napster and the digital revolution and embrace the many positives that it gives us. First of all, it is important to know that since the creation of Napster, people who use the file-sharing network spend more money on music. Jupiter Communications, Inc. has released a report that says that “users of Napster are 45 percent more likely to have increased their music spending than non-users.” (Regan, Hampton, p.1) This report shows that Napster does not take away from music sales, but instead helps to increase them. “Napster users are music enthusiasts…it’s logical to believe that they are more likely to purchase now and increase their music spending in the future.” (Regan, Hampton, p.1)
