pollution levels

The following report is based on a Multistrand Science Field Study conducted by grade twelve students attending Northside Christian College. Data was collected and recorded from four different designated sites on the North Pine River. Data referring to such things as temperature, turbidity, pH and dissolved oxygen levels was recorded. Also general information such as that of animal and plant species, visible pollution and the water quality were recorded at each of the four sites. In a wide scale or in general the North Pine River could be said to be clean to a safe and legal standard. Though the water was seen to be somewhat brown in most areas, only small amounts of harmful chemicals were found to be present, these chemicals were also only minute and almost undetectable. Thou pollution levels were overall considered low, relatively speaking the most polluted areas was sites three and four. To support the belief that the North Pine River is in fact a clean and healthy environment is the presents of an extremely healthy, vast and diverse plant and animal life. The sites that were investigated showed many different animal species. These include fish like guppies, catfish and gar fish, as well as birds and as we got closer to the sea, many crustaceans such as crabs. The plant life was extremely abundant and was most dominant at site three, the mangroves. If there is a pollution problem which is unable to be seen with the natural eye, then the plant life that we observed was extremely resilient to the pollution and have adapted extremely well. This can be proven quit easily with one look at the thriving plant and animal life in and along the river. The results indicate a pattern in the pollution of the North Pine River. After studying these patterns it could be stated that the closer to the mouth of the river, the more polluted the water becomes. Sites three and four show pollution in the turbidity, pH and dissolved oxygen test, as seen on the results page.
