Night
In the first chapter, a man named Jefferson is convicted of robbery and murder in the first degree. He was with two other guys, Brother and Bear. The two of them had already been drinking and went into a bar called The White Rabbit. There they had asked for some whine but the bartender, Mr. Grope, had noticed that they had already been drinking and refused to sell the liquor to them. As Mr. Grope was putting the bottle back on the shelf one of the boys, Bear, went around the counter after him. Mr. Grope warned him, then reached for the cash register and pulled out a gun. He shot Bear and Brother, one of them he shot twice. Jefferson was the only one left. Mr. Grope had been badly injured by Bear and Jefferson could hear him calling, ?boy?, from behind the counter. He was so shocked he didn't know what was going on, where he was, or how he got there. He stood unarmed behind the counter and saw that Mr. Grope was dead with the cash register was open. He knew that it would be wrong to take the money but he was so confused he couldn't see straight. He took a bottle of whine from the shelf and started drinking it quickly. In this chapter, Miss Emma and Grant visited Jefferson again and the next two visits were very similar to the first. Miss Emma would bring him some of his favorite foods and he would just stare in a one direction and not say a word. No matter how much she would talk, try to get him to speak, or even eat, he would just look in the same direction without flinching at her words. Grant walked by all of the inmates and again, they asked him for money and cigarettes. Just like before, he gave them the loose change that he had left in his pockets. After all of the trying they left the same way in which they had done before, with their heads down. On the drive home Miss Emma was explaining to Grant that she wouldn't be able to keep making these visits to Jefferson and that he would have to start visiting Jefferson alone. She still made the food for him to bring to Jefferson. Grant is at Vivian?s house and finds himself being lectured by her. She was tells him that he just should have walked out instead of getting tied up in that mess. Vivian insisted that Grant spend the night and then began preparing dinner for the two of them. While she is preparing dinner she informs Grant of her current status of the divorce with her husband. After they ate dinner Grant headed for the door and stared into the darkness. After that he turned to Vivian and begged her for forgiveness.
