If one read Raymond Carver?s Neighbors and Poe?s Masque of the Red Death, the reader would notice two characters that disregarded their responsibilities. If one took the time to compare the characters of Bill Miller from (neighbors) and Prince Prospero of the (Masque of the Red Death), One can easily state the differences between the two men. Also the reader can look at the same differences can be looked at as similarities. The Differences between Bill and the Prince. Jobs/Class- Bill was a middle class man that worked as a bookkeeper for a living. He lived with his wife in an apartment building. The prince was Royalty. His occupation was a prince that was responsible for defending the land and his people. He lived in a castle with his knights and his servants. Social activity -Bill was never motivated to go out for a night on the town or take his wife on a date or vacation

The similarities between Bill and the Prince. People depending on them- Bill responsibilities were to look over the Stones house for a few days while they went on vacation. Bill was trusted to take care of the family cat and other minor things around the house. The Prince had all the people in his kingdom depending on him. He was responsible for defending them and a whole list of things that go along with the job of being a prince. Selfishness-Bill was concerned with him self, and how he better him self not at his expense. He did not care for his friends or his wife?s feelings or personal things. The Prince lived like a King. He enjoyed his rich life style while his people suffered from the wrath of the plague. The fact of the People dying did not bother the Prince. Careless- Bill actions were careless. Bill practically moved into the Stones home. He uses their things and got very confortable being in their house. While he was having fun at the stones expense Bill lost track of what he was really there for. The Prince was fooled at his own party.
