German art movement of the 1920s began after the end of WWI. There where many artists in this period but the main chief painters of the movement were George Grosz and Otto Dix. They created styles of sharp realism and protest that mirrored the disillusionment following World War I. New objectivity retained the intense emotionality of earlier movements in German art, but it left the symbolism of expressionism for true pleasant explanation. Also Max Beckmann produced works in a related, channel during this time period.

Otto Dix born in 1891 and died in 1969, was an artist whose work defined the nature of New Objectivity clearly. After WWI Dix developed left wing views and his paintings and drawings became increasingly political. Like other German artists such as John Heartfield and George Grosz, Dix was angry about the way that the wounded and crippled ex-soldiers were treated in Germany which was shown in many of his pieces. His war paintings were appalling descriptions of indescribable horrors

Kathe Kollwitz born in 1867 and died in 1947 was one of the most influential and famous German printmakers of the twentieth century; Käthe Kollwitz starkly illustrated the difficulty of the poor and exposed the atrocity of war. Working at a time when many artists used their art to investigate formal problems, Kollwitz devoted herself to describing the human condition. She declined the use of color, letting her vigorously clear and smooth line express necessity and social purpose, and her simplification of form and the absence of irrelevant detail contribute to the power of her work. Poverty stricken, sickly women who are barely able to care for or nourish their children mark Kollwitz?s imagery. Kollwitz's art resounds with compassion as she makes appeals on behalf of the working poor, the suffering and the sick. Her work serves as a complaint of the social conditions in Germany during the late 19th and early 20th century. Images of death, war and injustice dominate her work that are placed or painted on a variety of media including sculpture, and lithography. It may be argued that her work was an expression of her violent life. She came into contact with some of the cities most needy people and was exposed to great suffering due to the nature of her husband's work. Hardship and heartache marred her personal life. She lost her son to World War I and her grandson to World War II and these losses contributed to her political sympathies and also was reflected in her art pieces. Each piece of Kollwitz is exceptional, with two well know pieces one a sculpture titled ?Mother and Child?(Pieta) made in 1917 and another piece titled ?Self Portrait? painted in 1924 with ink and wash on green paper. ?Mother and Child? is showing the passionate cry of a suffering mother, expressed in a sculpture of figures that melt into one another. ?Self Portrait? on the other hand is a beautiful characterization of a homely peasant face that has suffered and become beautiful through the understanding and acceptance of suffering.
