Id Ego and Superego

A theme that has been frequently discussed in our class during this past month is the ?id?, ?ego?, and ?superego? of characters in stories. Several stories we have read share this theme within them. Some people might be confused with the real meaning of this theme. ?Id? stands for what a person wants to do. It is about basic human needs and desires such as hunger, greed, lust, safety, etc. ?Superego is what a person ought to do. It is the big picture. Last but not least, an ?ego? is basically choosing between the above two. Some people may lean more toward the Id in their actions than others. What this theme is basically saying is that everyone has a different personality no matter how you look at it.

One of the stories we have read that shows this theme is ?The Use of Force?. This story was about a doctor who is unexpectedly dealing with a very hard to handle patient. The doctor was nice to the little girl at first and politely asked her to open her mouth for inspection. It demonstrated that his superego was active and that he really somewhat cared about this girl. ?Id? finally kicked in when the doctor was actually enjoying torturing this little girl by getting her to pry her mouth open. This story showed that at

any minute your ?id? could overpower the ?superego? or vice versa. It all depends on your surroundings.

In Conclusion, the theme of Id, ego, and superego is shown in almost every story with a variety of characters. Characters falling into different categories dealing with this theme often create a different but also an interesting plot, which would get the audience?s attention. Many movies we watch now have this theme. For example, in the movie ?Analyze This?, Billy Crystal plays a psychologist. In the beginning, he is listening to one of his patients and he imagines of some of the stuff he really would say to her like ?Get a Life? and then it flashes back to reality, making the audience believe that he really said that for a second, creating humor. This theme, even though hard to understand, is shown in almost every story we read and every movie we watch.

Also, the story called ?The Night of the Hunter? had many examples of this theme. This story is about a preacher who definitely has his ways for not liking women. This story had many characters that would fall into an Id, ego, or superego category for their type of personality. Pearl, John, and the Father would fall into the superego category. Whenever the preacher was about to kill the
