The measure of human life is viewed by physical beauty rather than inner beauty. Two prime examples of this are given in the essays ?Mirrors,? written by Lucy Grealy and ?Beauty,? written by Alice Walker. In these two essays, the two main characters have physical abnormalities, which restricts their outer beauty. The main characters have many similarities in their lives, before and after the abnormality, and how they worked through their outer beauty to show how beautiful they really are inside.

In the essay ?Beauty,? a young girl named Alice Walker grew up loving being the center of attention and having people tell her how cute she was. As Alice Walker writes, ?I stand, hands on hips, before my father. ?Take me, Daddy,? I say with assurance; ?I?m the prettiest!?(42)? Alice Walker Obviously knew at that age what beauty is and how this allures people. When she was eight she turned into a tomboy. This is when an accident occurred. Her brothers were playing with bb guns and accidentally shot her in the eye. Her life was never the same after this, having a big white blob form in her eye. This incident damaged her self-confidence and troubles her for the rest of her life. This corresponds with the story ?Mirrors? in which Lucy Grealy

Alice Walker and Lucy Grealy got surgeries to improve their misfortunes. Alice Walker subsequently starts picking up her head, doing good in school, ends up finding the boyfriend of her dreams, and is valedictorian of her class. But she didn?t change who she really was. She didn?t come to peace with what had happened to her and for her to except that. Lucy Grealy gets her last surgery the most severe of all. She didn?t look in the mirror for such a long time she never knew the results of this surgery. She then met a very attractive guy and had an appealing conversation with him. She started thinking to herself, what he thought of her. She then realized she had been handing out negative vibes to everyone she had met, and it was only being handed right back to her. It is from that point forward she realized that beauty was on the inside no matter what.

During the years suffering after the incident, Alice Walker thought she was a totally different person. She got bad grades, wasn?t social and not an out going girl anymore. She thought she had changed but the only thing she was worried about was her appearance and what people thought of the way she looked. Alice Walker states, ?I do not pray for sight. I pray for Beauty.?(45) As with Lucy G
