The Ones Who Walk Away From Om

?The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas? can be seen as the same society as which we live in. There is a comparison between the characters and events in our society, and the society of Omelas. The characters in Omelas symbolize the characters in our society. A symbol is described as a thing that suggests more than its literal meaning.

The story is set in the town of Omelas. The town is set for a summer festival. In the streets there were decorous old people wearing long robes, and merry women walking while carrying their babies and chatting at the same time. The children were dodging in and out; their high calls rising like the swallows? crossing flights over the music and singing. The town was happy and was ready for the festival.

In our society today, we?re much the same way when a big event comes to town. A lot of people get very creative. When you go to a 49er game, you see a lot of people that decorate themselves by painting their faces, wearing 49er clothing, kids running around, etc. A lot of people do


The people who were allowed into the basement and the boy could symbolize a relationship between the rich and the poor. Though the people could help the boy if they wanted to, they choose not to because they view him as a bum. They feed the boy and punish him when they want to. When they leave, the boy is screaming for help from them. He wants to try and explore the world outside his imprisonment. They pretend as though they don?t hear him, and walk away as if he wasn?t there.

There are many children out there today who don?t think they have an easy life. They get mad because they got grounded, or their first car is an old pinto, which they are embarrassed to drive. No matter how bad their lives are, the boy in the basement is a symbol that their lives could be a lot worse.

The story of the boy in the basement also symbolizes the prejudices between the rich and the poor. Some rich people can look down at the less fortunate people, and feel no guilt at all. The rich doesn?t want to help them out, and label them as bums.
