The story of Frankenstein takes place in a male dominated world, where women influence in the family is often not present to their weakness and compassion. The dream that Victor has on the eave of the monsters creation gives the reader a glimpse into his motives. The sudden change of a healthy Elisabeth in to victors dead and decaying mother represent the weakness of women while the image of dead mother alone represents the weakness of compassion, because it was Her compassion that lead to her getting ill and dying.
The major theme discussed by Shelley in the novel is the women?s role in the family. In the dream Victor sees the beautiful and vigorous Elizabeth turn into the corps of his mother, this and the lack or death of most the mother figures in the novel reinforce the notion that women are frail and weak. Victor experiments are intended to replace them.
What Victor saw as weakness in women also turned out to be there strengths. There compassion keeps children and family members from being rejected at birth because of there looks, and also they are much better suited for the task of giving birth than slightly mad scientists.
But just because Victor took the power of creation from women and bestowed it upon himself does not mean that he was also able to reproduce their compassion. Also it was compassionate that lead to Kathryn, victors mother. Although she was told many times not to, Kathryn demanded that she nurse the sick Justine back to health. Later she caught the sickness and died. Through the theme of birth and creation, Shelley criticizes Victor not only for creating the new being, but also for rejecting it when it comes to life.
