Compare and Contrast of Everyday Use and Monkey Business

Today I am going to show you how two great literary master pieces have so much in common, but are so different. I will be talking about Everyday Use a story written by Alice Walker, and Monkey Business written by Joseph Geha. I am going to compare the characters in each story by showing you how they are alike and how they are different. Even though the people in these stories are from different cultures they have a lot in common.

The first story I am going to talk about is Everyday Use. This story is written from the point of view of an old uneducated woman who has two daughters. She was a hard working lady who earned everything she had gotten. She was not the smartest person when it came to books, but she knew how things should be. The two children had two different views on life.

The oldest one, Dee, sees life as adventure, a place to learn and go out and get what you want. ?Dee wanted the nicer things in life. A yellow organdy dress to wear for her graduation from high school; black pumps to match a green suite that she made from an old suite someone had given her.? (2128) She was well educated and knew what life had to offer her so she was determined to get

Dee?s sister Maggie, on the other hand, was just as happy with being at home taking care of the house and working hard. She had a little education, but she never had the desire that Dee did in life. Maggie was happy living at home where things were planned. She didn?t need to meet a lot of people in her life. She was happy having everything in just plain black and white.

Jameel (Jimmy), his son, on the other hand was a boy who knew how to watch someone and learn how to do it. ?sit down papa. He takes Zizi suite coat off. I?ll put this over the kitchen radiator? (78) As you can tell he has learned how to take care of his dad the way his mother used to.
