The Less Famous Personal Life of William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was a well-known playwright of the Elizabethan era. Actually

he is just as well-known now as he was then. While Shakespeare is known more for his

plays and poetry, not much is known about his personal life. A lot of the history of

Shakespeare’s life is presumed as being true. This could be because the majority of his

works were published after his death at which time he accomplished the fame he holds

today. With all his fame, Shakespeare remains a mysterious figure with regards to personal

life. There are many gaps in the history of his life, which tells us little about Shakespeare

Shakespeare is believed to have been born on April 23, 1564 in

Stratford-upon-Avon where he was raised. He is the third of eight children being born to

John and Mary Shakespeare, and is the oldest son. John was a well-known merchant and

Mary was the daughter of a Roman Catholic member of the gentry. There is great

speculation of Shakespeare’s childhood years, especially regarding his education. It is

believed by scholars that he attended the free grammar school in Stratford. W
