One God, not the same religion

“Nearly everyone has some conception of religion. In fact, sometimes it appears that there are as many definitions of it as there are people” (Schmidt 9). Not only does each person have his or her own way of defining religion; each person has his or her own way of practicing a religion. On the surface, Islam and Christianity appear to have very little in common however, getting deeper into areas such as beliefs and origin, the two exemplify strong mutual resemblances, particularly in the fundamental areas. Like most religions, Christianity and Islam share many similar convictions such as one God and His prophets, yet each rejects the validity of all others -- claiming to be the only true faith of the only true God. But despite this, other contradictions between them exist, along with Jesus as the Messiah or prophet, original sin versus good deeds, and the path to salvation.

Both Muslims, those who submit themselves, and Christians believe in a god, referred to as "Allah" by the Muslims and "God" by Christians. Islam, meaning, "surrender" or "submission" to the will of Allah, emphasizes God as the creator and sustainer of the universe. This God, compassionate and honorable, calls all p

Did God have a son, or just a prophet in Jesus? In Christianity, Jesus, the Son of God, descended to earth to spread the word of the Lord to the people and ultimately die a brutal, sacrificial, and substitutionary death, so that one-day all people may reach eternal peace and glory in heaven. Christians praise Jesus' suffering for all humanity as well as for his teachings, and for the miracles he performed to assist the needy. Although not considered Messiah by the Muslims, Jesus remains a significant prophet. According to the Quran, Jesus the Messiah does not prevail because God does not beget. “He is Allah the one; Allah, the eternal, absolute; He begets not, nor is he begotten; and there is none like unto him.” To support their claim that Jesus cannot comprise in God, many Muslims point to Mark’s Gospel. In Mark 10:18, Jesus says, “Why callest thou me good? There is none good but One, that is God.” Later in Mark 15:34, Jesus calls out “My God, my God, why thy hast forsaken me?” In the first passage Muslims portray Jesus as saying “I am inferior to God,” and in the second he calling out to God. If he embodies God then why does he refer to himself as someone else? These points in the passages confuse Muslims and cause them to ask why he refers to another; he relates to another because of the trinity and elucidating that He is God. Muslims do not believe God can limit or structure himself into three separate and distinct pieces, but connected pieces. Their reasoning, God’s power and magnificent majesty would lose supremacy if he has other parts. In the Quran, it says, “…your God is One God: whoever expects to meet his Lord, let him work righteousness, and in the worship of his Lord, admit no one as partner.” Jesus distinguishes Christianity from every other religion in the world because no religious leader dares to proclaim himself God.

Another major principle in Christianity embraces original sin. Christians believe that the devil tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden, and Eve enticed Adam. This transpired the original sin, and as a result banished them from the Garden of Eden. Now every newborn inherits the original sin and needs cleansing, or baptism, to acknowledge this. Only the death of the sinless offspring of God, Jesus, could erase this sin. Therefore, no one is born clean, no matter if his life lasts
