As I Lay Dying

“I would look forward to the times when they faltered, so I could whip them”, quoted Addie. This is a cold-hearted mother filled with resentment for her children and her husband. Never truly having the desire for a family this lonely woman was driven insane and chose to believe there wasn’t anything after death for her, she believed in a created concept of nothing ness.

Addie was a cold-hearted mother in many ways. In the beginning of her passage she describes a child leaving with a dirty, snuffling nose. This set the stage for how she felt about children. After she had a son Cash she thought “living was terrible, and that motherhood was invented by someone who had to have a word for it”. This is a very powerful and hurtful phrase if Cash had ever heard it. Any kind of loving mother would be proud of her child and be content of her capability to bear children. Loving mothers think of their children as gifts not as burdens or “interruptions of quiet time” suggests Addie. She again seemed very cold because after she gave birth to Jewel she thought of him as her favorite. Why would a mother pick a favorite and let it be known who her favorite was? (Although she doesn’t seem to state directly that

Though Addie’s cold heart, resentment of her family, and terrible concept of nothing left her with an unfortunate life I felt she deserved a more painful death. But as the story showed she received pity, even after death. This was a malicious woman who cared only for herself and deserved the life she received. She deserved to have a lazy husband and a life of enduring pain; unfortunately the only bad situation that even happened to her was that she wasn’t buried until eight days after her death. She wanted to be buried in Jefferson so it was actually self-humiliation, but you can’t help but wonder if deep down Anse wanted to humiliate her.

Addie never truly had the desire to have a family, what she desired most was to be alone. In her first few lines of her passage she declared “I wouldn’t go home, instead I would go down the hill to the spring where I could be quiet and hate them”. The “them” she was describing was children in general (This of course was before she married, and even when she did marry her opinions of children never changed nor her desire to be alone). Addie repeatedly explains how children violated her quiet time. I’m not sure whether her attack is solely meant towards her children because the same attack could be applied on Anse. Even when Addie was younger she would retreat to a place where she could be alone. Addie wanted a solitary life, she needed no one to appreciate, compliment, or even love her. This woman was very unapproachable. Even when Anse had come to her door nicely dressed and asking for her hand in marriage she seemed vaguely interested in the whole marriage idea, yet, she speaks more about the property. Most women the marriage is very special to them and they
