Bagels, The One And Only

Most of us have eaten a bagel for breakfast at least once in our life and many of us eat them on a day-to-day basis, whether for breakfast, or just a daytime snack. It is ranked, as one of the top foods for commuters and it is an economical choice for any meal of the day. Yet even with the popularity of the bagel, many of us do not know the history and basic facts of our little round friend with a hole. The bagel has a long and highly controversial history. Both Poland and Austria claim to be the creator of the bagel, but this bread product is so old that isn’t clear which story is actually true. Before you find out the history of a bagel, a person should first know what a bagel is, a bagel is a “doughnut shaped yeast-leavened roll that is characterized by a crisp, shiny crust and a dense interior” (Britannica). This one small bread product has not only filled most of the worlds stomachs, it has also filled the world with controversy on who is the rightful creator of the bagel.

Yet “ironically after everyone rushed to get a bagel on Sunday morning, if the bakers were giving them away on Monday, not one would leave the shop”(Ross).
