Allan and Malcolm Loughhead, which later was changed to Lockheed, began in 1913. Lockheed was the first company to put a plane in flight over the San Francisco Bay. In 1932 the airplane company known as Lockheed was reorganized to be the modern day corporation it is today.

Martin Marietta Corporation combined. And in 1996, Lockheed Martin then combined with the defense electronics and systems intergration businesses of Loral.

Loral Corporation was founded in 1948 in New York City. It was a small defense electronics firm that grew into a billion dollar firm. As of now the Lockheed Martin Corporation comprises all or portions of 17 different companies.
