Gangs

A street gang is a group or association of three of more people who may have a common identifying sign, symbol or name, and are engaged in criminal activity. The definition for street gang member is complex. A person has to meet some of these criteria to be considered a gang member.

1. When the individual admits membership in a gang.

2. When a law enforcement agency or reliable informant identifies an individual as a gang member.

3. When an informant of previously reliability identifies an individual as a gang member.

4. When a person resides or frequents a particular gang's area and affects their style or dress, use of hand signs, symbols or tattoos, and maintains ongoing relationships with known gang members; or has been arrested several times in the company of identified gang members for offenses which are consistent with usual gang activity; and where the law enforcement officer believes there is a reasonable suspicion that the individual is involved in gang related criminal activity or enterprise.

6. Possessing gang literature that indicates membership.

The definition for a "street gang affiliate" is an individual who does not meet the criteria for a "street gang member", but is known to affi


· Establishing working relationships with local social service agencies

· Serving as a referral for jobs and other community services.

· Organizing athletic events with teams of law enforcement officers and gang members

Bigger cities have specialized units, which are focused only on gang activity and ways to decrease crimes due to gangs. Cities such as Los Angeles, California and Norman, Oklahoma just to name a few have their own gang units. The policeman in the gang units are experienced police officers that have been on the force for considerable lengths of times. The officers were normally on homicides and robbery units, which used to handles the crimes the gangs’ members caused. The officers know the members, the are informed of gang signs and symbols so they know what gangs operate or run a specific territory. The most important aspect is that they know how dangerous the gangs can become.

· Contacting parents of peripheral gang members (through the mail or in personal visits) to alert them that their children are involved with a gang.
