Men are also victims

Domestic violence is a problem in our society today, and we hear about it all the time whether from a newspaper, television or any other type of media. They proclaim too make the public aware of women getting abused and that it needs to be stopped. Violence against women is clearly a problem and the public should be made aware of it, but has anyone ever asked how often men are abused by women? I believe that men are the victims of domestic violence at least as often as women.

Male abuse is a real problem for men although law enforcement, other people, even the abused men themselves do not admit this exists. Men usually do not report abuse either because they are not aware of what abuse is or because they are too embarrassed. The men that want to seek help usually find themselves not knowing where to start because the help they need is not out there.

Domestic violence takes many forms from verbal, emotional, to physical abuse. We probably all accept the fact that both men and women can be victims of verbal and emotional abuse. But the one I want to bring to the reader’s attention is the physical abuse. This is the abuse that our society has ingrained in their heads that males are the abuser of women. There is no questio

I believe men today are being abused by their female partners just as much as women are being abused by their male partners, if not more. Naomi Yant, who holds a Masters degree in Science, is a L.P.C.C (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor) who works as a counselor for the Marion Counseling Center. I interviewed Yant to obtain an outside resource. She said, “Records have shown there are 835,000 men abused each year and 1.5 million women abused each year.” I believe that number for men is not very accurate as compared to the women. Women who get abused usually seek help or treatment, which is then recorded and documented. Men on the other hand do not report the abuse as often. This would lead to a false statement about the number of men being abused each year.

Health care and police are also ones that would be in denial of a man being a victim of abuse. They are more likely to accept other reasons for the bruises or other signs of injury instead of believing they came from being abused by a female. Health care personnel and police are quick to think that the injuries came from a work-related accident or a game of football with the guys. I think the police themselves end up arresting the wrong person a lot of the times. For example, if a female was beating up on her male partner and he finally decided to protect himself, he caused a red mark on her, if it was from shoving, grabbing or hitting back. The police would look at that and believe that he was the aggressive one instead of her and end up arresting him. This is a reason I believe men are afraid to pick up the phone and call the police. The police will end up taking a woman’s word over his word. Being abused hurts. It hurts even more if you are a man being abused and not believed.

If men would stand up and say they were being abused, I believe the number would be much higher. Yant stated, “There are a lot of men that who are too afraid or just ashamed to admit it.” Men were taught to grow up to be strong and to be able to take care of themselves. If a man were to come off as being weak and afraid
