An act of communication that causes someone to be shamed, ridiculed, held in contempt, lowered in the estimation of the community, or to lose employment status or earnings or otherwise suffer a damaged reputation. Libel and slander are defamation. These occasions are constitute privileges. Privilege may be absolute. No, the reporter has a right to write about a court case because courts are open to the public. They do however have very strict guidelines to follow. They are not, for example, allowed to reveal a witness name, nor write anything ambiguous which would create any insinuations. Generally there are many strict rules to follow when court-reporting.
