For U.S. companies planning to export goods or services to the Netherlands, they should obtain an official ruling on the customs classification. The customs classification/valuation is based on the Harmonized System (HS), which is constructed to classify goods in international trade and develop trade statistics. The U.S. business should acquire and send this information in advance, so the Dutch importer can determine the duties and taxes levied on the goods and services at the time of importation. In addition, a few goods from U.S. origin require import licenses, such as agricultural and food items. An advantage for U.S. companies is that licenses are generally rapidly granted by the Netherlands for U.S. products. Another advantage is that there is a variety of experienced importers, sales agents, and distributors, well versed in international trade that can assist companies in any problem they encounter.
