The Fall of a Family

In John Steinbeck’s Book, East of Eden, he succeeds in recreating the Fall of Man. He does this by creating characters that emulate the characteristics, behaviors, attitudes, and relationships of the Serpent, Cain and Abel. Cathy represents the Serpent, Charles and Adam recreate the relationship between Cain and Abel, and Cal represents the relationship of Cain with God. The Fall of Man starts in Chapter Three of Genesis, but East of Eden recreates the Fall of Man by incorporating Genesis Four.

When Earth was created, God planted many plants in the Garden of Eden and in the middle of the garden was the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Rather than physically preventing him from eating the apple, God gave Adam the choice, and thus the possibility of choosing right or wrong. The reason Adam had the choice is because without choice Adam would have been God’s prisoner. Therefore, Adam would have no obedience to show God because nothing could lead him astray. Also in the garden were the beasts of the field including the Serpent. The Serpent “was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. (Genesis 3:1)” The Serpent decieved Eve into eating the apple by maki

Both characters felt unappreciated by their respective father and had to choose how they were going to respond. Unfortunately, Cal and Cain chose the path of sin. In Cain’s case, “Went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the Land of Nod, east of Eden. (Genesis 4:16)” He didn’t repent and this severed his relationship with his Heavenly Father. The biggest difference between Cain and Cal is that Cal asked for his father’s forgiveness and therefore maintained his relationship with Adam. Steinbeck emphasizes that even though you have to live with the consequences of sin there is still hope through repenting.

The relationship between Cain and Abel is illustrated in East of Eden through the characters of Charles and Adam. Charles was better than Adam at everything. He was smarter, more athletic, had a better personality, but there was one thing Charles didn’t have that Adam did. That was the love of his father. Adam was Cyrus’ first born child and he showed his favoritism towards Adam because of the way he treated the two boys. Charles was so jealous of Adam because he had his father’s blessing and it showed. So, Charles saved up to get his father a great gift for his birthday and after thinking real hard he decided to get him a brand new Swiss Army Knife. Charles thought he got him the absolute best gift, until the gifts were given to Cyrus. Charles’s anger is expressed to Adam when he tells him, “Look at his birthday! I took six bits and bought him a knife made in Germany- three blades and a corkscrew, pearl-handled. Where’s that knife? Do you ever see him use it? Did he give it to you? I never even saw him hone it. Have you got that knife in your pocket? What did he do with it? And that’s the last I heard of the pearl-handled knife. (Steinbeck 29)” He goes on to say, “ What did you do on his birthday? You think I didn’t see? Did you spend six bits or even four bits? You brought him a mongrel pup you picked up in the woodlot. You laughed like a fool and said it would make a good bird dog. That dog sleeps in his room. He plays with it while he’s reading. He’s got it all trained. And where’s the knife. Thanks, just thanks. (Steinbeck 30)” After the talk between the brothers, Charles reared back and began beating on Adam. Charles walked away leaving Adam beaten and crying. While Adam lay there, he heard footsteps. He saw his brother coming for him with a hatchet in his hand and match in the other looking for his brother so he could kill him. After a while of searching, Charles gave up and went back to the house. In comparison, this is the same type of thing that happened to Cain and Abel. God blessed both Charles and Cain. Charles was a great athlete, superior mind, and a charming personality. Cain was an accomplished farmer and he worked very hard at what he did. However, both Charles and Cain chose to focus on what they didn’t have, which in this case were the blessings of their father. This resulted in jealousy, which lead to hatr
