Polk County
Polk County in the Nation’s Capitol The premier of Zora Neale Hurston’s play, Polk County, at the Arena Stage in Washington D.C. was Friday the 29th of March. Zora Neale Hurston was an excellent writer African-American literature and a playwright. She was born in Eatonville, Florida, an all black town. Growing up, Zora Neale Hurston experienced separate but equal politics of Eatonville. This experience deeply affected her outlook on racial issues. Her writings had a huge influence in the Harlem Renaissance. This dramatic play is appropriate for all ages, but I would suggest it for the more mature person because of some situations, including some minor violence and some adult situations that the younger audience might not understand. There was nothing inappropriate for viewing, just a little above the younger audience. Polk County professionally premiered on the 29th of March in the Arena Stage. The play was directed by Kyle Donnelly, and the 37 musical pieces within the play are directed by Stephen Wade, of the long-running show "Banjo Dancing." Cathy Madison, who helped adapt and edit the script for Arena Stage. Madison said she and Donnelly did minor, cosmetic editing to help the play flow better -- and to keep
Dicey wants to be with the guy named My Honey, but he will have nothing to do with her. Then the new comer from New York, Leafy Lee, and him fall in love. Dicey already hates Big Sweet, and now she has another enemy to try to hurt. She gets another bully that has been thrown out of the town to come back and “take care” of her problems for her. But it must be done before My Honey and Leafy get married. The actors had some difficulty at times projecting their voices so that everyone could hear them at all times. Sometimes one would have to strain to hear them clearly, or to hear them at all. This might have been due to the fact that it was still in the opening week and performance still was getting evaluated. On the subject of plot, I felt that there was no real plot for the first half of the play. It seemed as if you were just thrown into the middle of some peoples’ lives and that we were to know what had happened up to that point and why everyone was acting the way they were. It starts with Big Sweet beating some guy for taking her man’s money in a shady card game. Then this white girl comes to the black community from New York and says she wants to learn to sing the blues, but she is secretly looking for her dad. The play doesn’t even show her looking for her dad at all. It does mention that she found him and told him off, but that was it. I think it could have been more interesting if the play had showed her sneaking around to find her dad
