What's it all for? This is a question that has been pondered as far back as the beginning of man and still hasn't fully been answered or understood. There are people that will tell you they know the answer to this age-old question but the truth is the answer is different for everyone. Why are we here? Why does the sun come up? And for the scope of this paper, why am I in college? The first two questions I proposed are probably larger in scale than the last but most of us can understand them using faith or some higher power. The last question asked seems mediocre when compared with the others but in my view it takes a little more reflecting and reasoning to understand why we make the choices we do. There isn't any one particular reason why I made the decision to attend college. The decision consisted of many factors, most of which I was unaware of until after I was here. Most would like to agree that the reason for attending college is for the pursuit of some "higher education". Since this seems to be the consensus, I'll give my definition of what it means to be educated incorporated with my reasons for attaining this education.
The phrase "He is educated", can sti
r up many different thoughts in ones' mind. Some might take it to mean the man attended an Ivy League college and is now a successful businessman. Others could take it to mean that this man is an experienced car thief who has much to offer novices in his field. To me, this phrase at its roots means that
spend so much time and money on it if it did not? Obtaining a college degree is slowing becoming a rite of passage for the people of the twenty-first century. In the ancient tribes of South America, when a man completed his right of passage he was prepared to contribute to the survival of his tribe. He had been taught all the things that the people before him had known and now possessed the tools necessary to lead his tribe into the future. He was forced to balance his need for self-gratification with the need to contribute to the betterment of his tribe. We still face this internal battle of ideals today: the battle of opportunities and responsibilities. In today’s society, many choose only to better themselves and others only society. College allowed me to see that the balance between the two can be found.
