cloning

The topic of cloning has been in much debate in recent times. It is a very controversial issue, which contains many different and assorted viewpoints. While some find the procedures and actions concerning cloning acceptable, others object to it on a basis of saying it is evil and immoral. Many of those who raise objections are those who find it inappropriate for religious reasons. In both cases, an important concern is the possibility of abuse of this knowledge. One of the frequently asked questions is, “Where will all of this stop?” It may start by just experimenting and studying, but then what comes next? Will it become part of our everyday routine to start producing human bodies for spare parts? Will those created “individuals” be actual people in society? Who can honestly say? No one can be sure exactly where all of this cloning leads or where it will exactly stop. The possible benefits for society are far greater than the problems; therefore, cloning should be legal.

To the society of today, the term cloning can be expressed in several different ways. One such way would be to describe it as “playing God.” Another would be to describe it as an act of making spare parts for the world. Society would de

In 1902, another scientist, embryologist Hans Spemman, used a hair from his infant son as a knife to separate a 2-celled embryo of a salamander. He later separated a single cell from a 16-celled embryo. Spemman went on to propose what he called a "fantastical experiment," to remove the genetic material from an adult cell and use it to grow another adult. In this way, he theorized, he would be able to prove that no genetic material was lost as cells grew and divided (Gedney 129- 130).

Another form of cloning would be therapeutic cloning, or the cloning of tissue or organs. This is done through growing cells or tissues in cultures along with the actual producing of embryos to be born. This process is completed with the use of stem cells. When an egg is fertilized and begins to divide, the cells are all alike. As the cells divide, certain cells differentiate and become the stem cells that produce certain tissue and then organs (Gill 76). Research in therapeutic cloning is very active. There is still much for scientists to learn about cell differentiation and how it works. To clone an organ, a stem cell must be produced and then used to clone that specific organ (Nash 61).
