I have chosen to depict and analyze the lyrics to the song “Fire and Rain” by James Taylor. Taylor is one of the most highly respected musicians and songwriters ever. The song “ Fire and Rain “ is definitely one of the most famous and personal songs written by Taylor.
Taylor grew up with a distant father and a family who had high expectations for him. From all the pressure of his family by the age of Seventeen he was in a mental Institution. In the first verse of the song “Fire and Rain” I feel Taylor is talking about losing a close friend, perhaps a wife. I think that the person he has lost has caused a great deal of pain on him and that they have either died or have walked out on him. He feels that someone or som
ething has pushed this person away from him and he will never be the same without them. I believe that he is writing this song in memory or to this person he is missing so badly. I feel this way because in an article I read I found out that Taylor had a troubled marriage to pop star Carly Simon.
In the last verse Taylor talks about how he is finally moving on and how he has started over and is walking down a new path. Just as soon as he feels he has overcome this battle with grief he is struck with a thought of her, which pulls him in the opposite direction. Taylor stays strong though and remembers the good things he has coming for him and how his dreams of her coming back have been crushed. Finally he feels at peace and is on his way to greater things.
