The poem titled “Storm Warnings” seems to be just warning us that a storm is coming. However after thoroughly reading the poem, one can compare the storm to a person who faces or will be faced with difficult tasks emotionally as well as possibly being involved in a rocky relationship.
The first line right away is an imagery of coldness and loneliness, “the glass had been falling all the afternoon”. Besides for the glass falling being a metaphor for a barometer dropping it can also be compared to a warning that trouble is brewing inside the human mind. Continuing in the first stanza the “gray unrest is moving across the land” besides for the gray being another imagery of cold it also can be compared to someone who is depressed and isn’t getting any better as it spreads across his body while it keeps getting worse. The first stanza ends with “ and walk from window to closed window, watching boughs strain against the sky”. Making a window a metaphor to the human eye, no matter if the eye is open or closed because it is all in the mind he watches as the problems branch out like boughs out against the sky, the sky being compared to his problems; so big and endless. His problems seem like they are never going to

This next stanza focuses on even if we are able to know ahead of time that a storm or emotional feelings are coming there is no way to alter what is to come. A storm like inner troubles are both very complex, neither time nor any instrument can hide the truth. “Time in the hand is not control of time”, basically this line focuses on what the narrator’s sense of helplessness is when faced with either an emotional battle or a bad relationship.
go away. “And think again as often, when the air moves inward toward a silent core of waiting”. Comparing the air to the narrator’s emotions as it moves inward to a silent core this being his heart and there is nothing he can do but wait and hope for it to go away.
This poem “storm warnings” is a very good poem, in that it describes two different things that affect us in different ways. There is the physical battle against a storm, which is easier to overcome then the mental battle of emotions if you have a house to stay warm in as well as safe. The different imagery and metaphor make this poem easy to understand how people try to deal with these problems whether it is a storm or with emotions. The author is just trying to give hope to those readers who fall under this category who have to battle these feelings a
