The guru’s purpose is to help their followers find the shortest path to salvation. Followers love their gurus and think they can do no wrong. Rajneesh is worshiped like a god. His followers do whatever he tells them to do. Gurus like Rajneesh are said to be “self-proclaimed” gods. The followers of these gods literally worship the ground they walk on. People leave everything behind to come and become completely devoted to their god. “Guru is God”, is what the followers say. He feeds the people’s emotions to help his ego. There are many similarities between this relationship and Jonestown. The people believed Jim Jones was god and their relationship was based on love.
Hundreds of “self-proclaimed” god-men have invaded the west. Guru’s go west to convert people and because they believe they have something to offer these people.
Their belief system is that everything is relative. They have no absolute moral conditions. People are drawn into the “emptiness.” They believe their guru has something that they think they need. When they decide to follow their guru, they are giving up their own identities. The freedom they believe they have is actually a freedom from individuality.
They act like a big family. Most followers are emotionally wounded needing someone to fulfill their needs and they think they find this in their guru. This devotion actually ruins families because they focus all their attention on their guru. People leave their families to prove their total devotion towards their guru. Ninety percent of marriages in Christian Movement end in divorce.
