I’d like to state that our government and society are founded upon the basic truth that all men are created equal. Why then does our government go to such great lengths to handicap the successful and provide for the unsuccessful? Where in our elected officials’ job descriptions does it insist they play Robin Hood? Why do we reward the unmotivated, the incompetent, and morally defunct members of our society while at the same time punishing those who are living the American Dream? Where did our pride go? Where is the work ethic that made America great? It all vanished, or took a less important role the exact same time we removed the incentive to do great things.

These three things are examples of faults in our society right now. They will never change though, because no one will ever get elected to a high office if they get up on a soap-box and say they’re going to give tax cuts to the rich, decrease or abolish welfare, and get rid of affirmative action. Wait…Bush did get elected president, but he wouldn’t have if he worded his positions like I just did.

Where do all of those tax dollars go? Well, the majority of them go to federal programs designed to help the less fortunate. Welfare is a perfect example of one of these government programs.

Don’t get me wrong; I love this country more than anyone. We are, as George W. Bush said, “The brightest beacon of freedom in the world.”

Another problem with our government is affirmative action. This goes against the very foundation of the Constitution. While it’s true that some people in this country have better and more opportunities to succeed, no one should get a job or scholarship simply because of the color of their skin, their gender, or their ethnicity. Affirmative action is reverse racism. How can this country ever expect people to accept each other as equals when our own government sponsors the opposite? It’s very hypocritical of our government to trumpet equality, and in the same breath promote racism.

Welfare was designed by the President of the United States to be a short-term program that lasted only during the Great Depression. It was meant to help the American people, who had hit a rough spot in their life, get back on their feet. It worked marvelously, and the economy eventually grew stronger. When the depression was over the government found it incredibly difficult to get rid of welfare as it had originally intended, though.
