Steroids: Are they worth takin
Steroids are just another way for athletes to have big muscles. When they take this drug, these athletes don’t really know what is happening to their bodies. Overall steroids have a bad outcome to whoever uses them. Most athletes use steroids to enhance their performance on the playing field. In the 19th century many cyclists used steroids to enhance stamina, but many died from the effects of the drug (1994-00 Britannica Encyclopedia). Many people think that steroids will enhance their play or make them faster, this is true, but it does not last. For example, football requires strength and speed. So many football player’s think that by taking steroids they will have bigger bodies and increased strength. A retired N.F.L. player, Steve Courson felt the need to take steroids and suffers from an almost fatal heart muscle disorder (Drugs and Sports-page 23). Steroids are commonly used in sports such as, football, basketball, track, weight-lifting and swimming (www.usdoj.gov & Drugs and Sports-pgs. 20-25). Weight-lifters use steroids to better tone their muscles and increase mass. While all of this is true many weight-lifters uses steroids is because, they may feel that physical training is just not enough. Others
take them because it is just another alternative to gain muscle fast, and they don’t have to wait. Steroids are considered a way to “cheat” in competition. This is true because, that one person who took steroids increased their strength and has more of an advantage over other people on the playing field (Steroids- Pg. 9). However all steroids can and will take their toll on the person’s body who uses them. When a person takes steroids they are giving up their devotion to their family and their friends. Instead they devote themselves only to the drug and forget about the one’s who matter most (Steroids page 35). Steroids can make you violent, self-centered, depressed and suicidal. Steroid abuse or even usage can screw up your life pretty bad. They become things instead of people. Steroids can cause you to easily become angry and this may even lead to violence. When you take steroids you are taking a risk on your own life and even your best friend’s life. This can lead to “Roid Rage”, this is a steroid-induced, spontaneous, highly aggressive behavior where your friends will have to call the police and the police have to come into contact with the user (Steroids- page 37 and www.steroidlaw.com). On the other hand steroids can cause the person to become very depressed. This comes because the abuser is too involved with the drug and they will lose everything that has meaning such as family, boyfriend, girlfriend and sports. Steroids can also make you very suicidal. Some steroid abusers are not able to stop using and they do not know how to cope with their lives a
