Casey as A christ figure

In the book The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck writes about a family’s trip from Oklahoma to California in search of meaningful work. The “Dust Bowl” of the 1920’s caused the Joad family to migrate to California in the 1920’s. The “Dust Bowl” was responsible for most small farmers from Texas to South Dakota to lose their farms. A combination of drought, improper crop rotation, and dust storms were the major causes of the “Dust Bowl” because all the land was ruined and all the crops were ruined. Unable to produce crops, the farmers were forced off their land by banks that foreclosed on their loans. The “Dust Bowl” occurred just before the Great Depression and there was very little work left in this part of the United States. However, there were handbills that were passed out saying that there were many jobs available in California and urged people to head west. The Joads were one of the families that were forced off there land; this is the reason they headed west to California.

Based on these handbills thousands of families traveled west to California in search of work and a better life. The promise of abundant work in California proved to be false and most of the migrants suffered from starvation

Jim Casy is a former preacher who felt he led a sinful life. He decided to quit preaching the word of God and go into the wilderness to find himself. In the book Masterplots by Frank Magill, Casy is described by Magill as a Christ figure. Magill states, “It’ ant preachers who rebelled against traditional religion, went into the wilderness….”(2635) Casy spent a lot of time in the wilderness just as Jesus did praying and seeing who he really is and what his purpose is on earth. Casy is introduced when Tom Joad is walking to his parent’s house and he stops by a tree to rest. Casy is also resting near the tree and the two begin to talk. After a short time they go together to find the Joad family. Casy has many aspects of Jesus Christ in him but what he always does is he denies that he is nothing like Jesus Christ. One example is ‘“I ain’t sayin I’m like Him, an’ I got mixed up like Him, an’ I went into the wilderness like Him….”’(110) During this journey Casy begins to preach to Tom, but Tom is not very receptive. He is only concerned with getting home and staying out of trouble. The pair eventually arrive at John Joad’s house who is Tom’s brother.

‘“ Leave me to salt this meat,’ he said ‘I can do it. There’s other stuff for you to do.’’’ Ma replies ‘“ It’s women’s work.’” ‘“ It’s all work,’ the preacher [Casy] replied.

answer to their dreams. This book did not get a favorable reception in California because it showed the real way people were treated and it made the people of California look bad. Initially, the book was outlawed in California because people saw the book as a false piece of literature instead of facing the facts about what really was occurring. Jesus Christ is a dominant figure in the Christian faith and he is very hard person to compare a character in a book to. Jesus Christ is the only person in the history of the world who has been a leader of all people not only for one group, that’s why it is hard to see somebody being compared to Jesus Christ.

‘They’s to much of it to split up to men’s or women’s work.”’ (146) Casy used this conversation to make the point that if everyone works together they can be more productive. Casy realizes that when people work together they accomplish a lot more and are able to achieve their goals. This foreshadows what will happen in two parts of the story. It proves that when people band together they accomplish much more and people who witness this happening will always remember what they were fighting for. Casy also shows that he cares for all people when he sacrifices himself for the safety of others. Casy does this when the Joads are in a “Hooverville” and
