There have been lots of views and opinions surrounding the arguments whether marijuana should be legalized and if tobacco should be made illegal. My question is what is the difference? I don’t condone smoking marijuana, nor do I do it, but if tobacco is legal then marijuana should also be legal. Both smoking tobacco and smoking marijuana are extremely bad for your health, however smoking tobacco is far worse for your health than marijuana. The reasons for marijuana not being legalized are similar to the reasons people want tobacco to become illegal. Every year millions of people openly smoke cigarettes why not marijuana?

Marijuana’s short-term effects include temporary problems with memory and problems with learning. It also causes temporary distorted perception (sounds, time, touch etc.), trouble thinking and solving problems. For some people smoking marijuana causes loss of motor coordination, but it is nothing compared to the short-term effects that tobacco produces.

Tobacco’s short-terms effects are a lot more serious


The long-term effect of marijuana is that marijuana smoke contains some of the same cancer-causing compounds as tobacco. However, Tobacco contains more cancer-causing compounds than marijuana does thus tobacco is more dangerous.

It is very contradictory of our society to say that one thing is legal, but another thing that is very similar to it is illegal. It’s really teaching kids a bad message saying that it’s not ok to smoke marijuana, but it is ok to smoke tobacco. This is very similar to how the government outlawed the advertisement of hard liquor, but still allowed the advertisement of beer and wine. Can’t you still get drunk off the beer? Don’t they have the same effect? Don’t marijuana and tobacco have very similar effects on the health of human body?

Tobacco use is just as dangerous, if not more dangerous than smoking marijuana. Why is marijuana illegal, while cigarettes continue to be legal? That is a question that all people need to ask their government officials, maybe if enough people were to complain about this problem, then somet
